7.5 % 58 mmol/mol 169 mg/dL 9.4 mmol/L Diabetic Target / Moderate Control
8.0 % 64 mmol/mol 183 mg/dL 10.1 mmol/L Elevated (High Risk of Complications)
9.0 % 75 mmol/mol 212 mg/dL 11.8 mmol/L Elevated (High Risk of Complications)

How is eAG Calculated from HbA1c?

The standard ADAG clinical equation defined by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) is:

eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × HbA1c (%) − 46.7

To obtain the average glucose in international units (mmol/L):

eAG (mmol/L) = (28.7 × HbA1c (%) − 46.7) ÷ 18.0182

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between HbA1c and daily blood sugar?
A daily fingerstick or CGM reading shows your glucose at that exact second. HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) reflects your weighted 2-to-3 month average blood sugar because red blood cells live approximately 120 days.
What is Estimated Average Glucose (eAG)?
eAG translates your 3-month HbA1c percentage into the familiar daily mg/dL or mmol/L numbers you see on your personal glucose meter.
How often should HbA1c be tested?
Patients with well-controlled stable diabetes typically test every 6 months. When starting new medications or when glycemic targets are not met, testing every 3 months is standard.
How do you convert HbA1c % to IFCC mmol/mol?
The IFCC master formula is: IFCC (mmol/mol) = (HbA1c % - 2.15) × 10.929. For example, 7.0% equals 53 mmol/mol.
